Supporting a College Football Playoff

“The bottom line is not everybody wants a playoff. A certain chunk of those people have silly reasons not to opt for that system. But others have perfectly valid reasons, myself among them.” writes CFR. Unfortunately, these reasons, valid or otherwise, were not included in the post which focused on Auburn’s Tommy Tubberville and his recent comments about the BCS process.

A College Football Playoff is possible. And it is possible to keep all the Bowl Games in the process. Just look at the major conference championship games and the impact they have had on Bowl Games. None at all and in the process these games generate some pretty hefty fees for the two teams and the conferences as a whole.

You could follow this up with 2 weeks of playoff games and then let the major bowls host the final 4 teams for a 3 game series. The other playoff teams would go to bowl games as well. Look both Division II and Division III figured this out a long time ago.
There simply are some folks who are preventing it and they use excuses which are all too often lame. My favorite in the lame category is the time away from school. Check out the baseball and basketball teams’ regular season travel schedule. There is no football playoff suggestion that would in any way come close to taking players away from school as much as these sports do today. And that’s NOT counting post season play.

I also like the one about the tradition of football polls and the interest generated when there the NCAA Champion is disputed. I missed the lack of interest last year when the two teams meeting in the Rose Bowl were by all accounts the right two teams to decide the championship. I think we need more of that.

So, if you want to see more rigor in the ranking process or you don’t like the BCS rankings or you just like college football, create you own College Ranking at Sports Crossfire today.
